Chinese Authorities Say Hong Kong Protests 'Doomed to Fail'

Hong Kong Protest

The 'Umbrella Revolution' has taken Hong Kong by storm over past weeks as thousands of protesters participate in pro-democracy rallies, but according to the Communist China People's Daily, Chinese officials have no plans of conceding to demands for a democracy in Hong Kong, citing that the protests are 'doomed to fail.'

The Communist China People's Daily, known as the formal mouthpiece of China's communist party, further stated that the demands of protesters for free elections are "neither legal nor reasonable."

Massive crowds have shut down major parts of Hong Kong, bringing many businesses to a standstill and even affecting air travel to the volatile city. For the most part, protests have been peaceful leading up to the offer of Hong Kong's leadership to engage in serious talks with protesters in order to bring the stand-off to an end.

Beijing, for its part, has been reluctant to concede to any demands as it is believed that backing down in the face of protest could create widespread problems in the Mainland.

According to reports, in hopes of bringing the rallies to a peaceful end, China's government has been reluctant to intervene militarily, although soldiers have been stationed throughout Hong Kong to ensure protests don't get violent.

Beijing has also stood firm behind Hong Kong's harried leader, CY Leung, despite widespread demands that he step down from office.

With tension at an all-time high, Leung finally agreed to break the impasse and take part in talks with the Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS), among other groups, which is one of the leading organizations to lead demonstrations in Hong Kong.

However, HKFS released a statement early Friday stating that although willing to engage in peaceful talks with Leung, they are standing strong to their demands for his resignation and plan on continuing the occupation unless their demands are met.
