iPhone 6 prototype selling on eBay for $50,000

iPhone 6 prototype

Apple takes care to make sure their prototypes and developer models do not get out in public. When the iPhone 4 launched, Gizmodo paid $5,000 to get a prototype of the device, and this angered then CEO Steve Jobs, blacklisting the tech blog from future events.

It looks like there has been another slip up this year with the iPhone 6. An eBay listing shows a full prototype edition of the iPhone 6, with the developer mode of iOS8. The prototype model was apparently sent to the seller by accident from Verizon Wireless.

From the photos provided by the seller, it definitely looks like a prototype model. The outside of the iPhone 6 has red tape on the charging port and the software looks like something only a developer would see, with a lot of information on the internals of the iPhone 6.

Considering the iPhone 6 internals are a well guarded secret, with the A8 and M8 chip both proprietary technologies, it might interest competitors to see what is beneath the surface of the iPhone 6. The developer edition could reveal this hidden information.

According to the seller, the iPhone 6 prototype does not make calls, but can connect to WiFi, Bluetooth and other networks. It has minimal function to the average user, but to the Apple superfan or a competitor who wants information on the iPhone 6, this could be worth thousands.

The bidding will end in four days. The current bid sits at $50,100 -- with 71 bids in total. Apple has still not given an official statement on the matter, we wouldn't be surprised to see the eBay listing disappear in the next few days.
