iOS8 Slow Adoption due to Poor Updates and Storage Problems

Apple might have a serious fragmentation problem for older devices, with only 47 percent of all iOS users moving over to iOS8. This is a much lower number than previous years, where Apple easily grabbed 80 percent of all iOS users within the first month, with 95 percent normally settled on the new update after the holiday season.

Why is iOS8 having such a hard time? Well, the problem is two-fold, Apple made one of the worst 0.1 updates ever, removing cellular capabilities and Touch ID, and some users have been reporting loss of contacts, apps and photos when updating.
Apple has botched the update to the point some users are afraid of what will happen if they upgrade. This is a big issue and one we see on PC, with 25 percent of users still running decade old Windows XP, and another 45 percent running Windows 7.
The second problem is storage, iOS8, for some reason, requires 10GB of available room to install. This is insane for users who only have 16GB of storage to start off with, meaning they have to delete a lot of their apps, photos or other media, in order to update.
When the gains from updating on an older device are small, deleting most of your apps to accommodate for the update is just not worth the effort. We are not sure what Apple can do to make users more interested. The update is free, but it needs to be more compressed.
This does bring up the question of why Apple has kept the 16GB option for the iPhone 6. The next update, probably named iOS9, will no doubt take all of the 16GB to update, making it even harder for older iOS owners to get the latest update on their device.
We are seeing huge sale numbers for the iPhone 6, potentially eradicating a lot of iOS7 and lower smartphones on the market. Apple is selling more 64GB iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units as well, meaning most users will have an easier time in the future.
