Sony to Add Android's Lollipop to Xperia Devices

Sony Xperia family

Sony has announced they will be bringing Android 5.0 Lollipop to all their current Xperia devices, in a big effort to stop fragmentation on their smartphones.

In a move to make sure nobody is left out, Sony today announced that all of the Xperia Z devices will receive Android 5.0 Lollipop, the newest update from Google.

These devices will include: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.

The Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition will be the first to get the update - as Google Play Editions often do - before the first batch to the Xperia Z3 and Z2 series in 2015. This means a good few months before we see the fruits of the update.

In the announcement, Sony said the releases would be tiered, and some networks may not support the update. This likely means some U.S. carriers, and other places where the carrier implements their own software updates, on top of the manufacturer updates.

Sony takes longer to update their smartphones than most competitors, due to their own homemade software and skin. Even though the Xperia UI is seen as one of the cleanest looking skins for Android, it is also one of the most different from the original Android UI.

Android Lollipop adds a whole new design language, Material Design, alongside new multi-tasking features, better notifications and multiple users, alongside a bucket list of other changes and fixes.

Google is adding it onto the Nexus 5, 6 and 9 first, along with Google Play Edition devices, before the end of 2015.
