With the World Series down to its final game or two, the San Francisco Giants and Kansas City Royals took a travel day off Monday to get ready for the final stretch.

The Royals are down 3-2, but not out, especially given the teams resiliency this year and past history. The last time the Royals made the World Series in 1985, they were down three games to two to the St. Louis Cardinals. Thanks to a controversial, and as it turned out wrong, call in Game Six, the Royals won that game at Kansas City and the seventh game to win the championship.

The road to victory for the Royals may be challenging, but not impossible. Following Giants ace Madison Bumgarner Sunday shutout win, he likely won't be available for more than inning, or two, should there be a Game 7, so the Royals will be facing mere mortal pitching. The team also has the home field advantage with the next two games scheduled for Kaufmann Stadium.

Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer said "We know we can do it," following Bumgarner's four hit shutout Sunday. "We've got a confident group inhere."

That may well be the case given baseball history the last few decades. Teams playing Games 6 and 7 at home, even when behind, have won the final two games eight of the last 10 times to win the series.

Besides the Royals, the 1986 Mets, 1987 and 1991 Twins most famously have turned the trick. Only the 1992 Braves and 2003 Yankees came home trailing 3-2 and lost the sixth game.

The Royals have to overcome a lack of offense from the last three games played at San Francisco's AT&T park. They scored in only one inning following scoring four runs in Game 4's third inning.

All-star outfielder Alex Gordon is two for 20 and third baseman Mike Moustakas is three for 16. Designated Hitter Billy Butler only managed one at-bat. Bumgarner struck him out on three pitches.

While the Royals defense was shaky in the National League park, their much-vaunted bullpen showed leaks with the Giants managing three runs and hitting four for nine against Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera.

Yet, the Royals remained focused and optimistic despite the challenge.

"We feel good about where we're at," outfielder Jarrod Dyson said. "We've got some guys that we can handle and we look forward to getting the job done."
