China's President Xi Jinping wants to establish a new think tank that will focus on the country's efforts to modernize its leadership style.
President Xi, who heads the Leading Group for Overall Reform, attended the group's sixth meeting on Monday. The participants reviewed files containing reports on building new think tanks influenced by Chinese traits, China Daily reported.

"Building a new type of think tank with Chinese characteristics is an important and pressing mission," the Chinese president said during the meeting.
In addition, Xi said constructing a new think tank involves promotion of democracy, bolstering the country's "soft power," and modernization of China's governance. Xi also said a country's most important tools are intellectual resources because they help the leaders preside over the nation successfully.
After the meeting, he released another statement describing how implementing reform in the country requires great intellectual support, the report added.
In China, think tanks have been developing fast and supporting modernization and reform. However, they cannot evolve fast enough to keep up with the country's development. Xi said the country needs more influential think tanks with a good international reach.
Xi said think tanks should be able to push researchers to conduct a lot of new studies and research. In addition, he said they should be able to focus on the general situation of the country, the report relayed.
There are several think tanks affiliated to the Communist Party, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the government, enterprises and the military. Xi said all these think tanks, including non-government ones, should follow a coordinated path of development to help them establish clear boundaries and features.
President Xi already has an idea for what he thinks is the best leadership for the new think tank. He said the Communist Party of China (CPC) should lead it to help it stick to the right direction.
