Google, LG Agree To 10-Year Cross-Licensing Agreement

Google has signed another 10-year cross-licensing agreement with an Android manufacturer, this time, South Korean electronics giant LG has partnered with Mountain View.

The deal will open up both LG and Google's patents for more innovation between the two companies. This will allow LG more valuable software and algorithm patents, while Google gets a look at LGs hardware patents.

Both companies have a lot of available patents and licensing material to view. Having this agreement may allow LG to snag some of Google's tech for their own benefits, but may work in the opposite way if Google wants to use some of LG's hardware patents.

LG has been a big provider for Google in the past few years - the lead developer on the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. Motorola took charge of the Nexus 6, but LG is working on a 3D mapping tablet for Google, set to launch in 2015.

"In order to make innovative products and new technology, we plan to change the life value of consumers by enhancing our relationship with Google," said Lee Jeong-hwan, Chief of LG's Patent Office.

Having this relationship with the partner on Android makes it a lot easier for Google to push out updates to phones, tablets and now wearables. LG is also interested in building an Android TV, after the failed Google TV service going under.

Even though these cross-licensing deals are rare, LG is not the first manufacturer to receive one from Google. Samsung, the largest smartphone manufacturer worldwide, also announced a cross-licensing deal earlier this year with Google.
