Facebook Announces Standalone Groups App

Facebook is continuing its mobile rollout of one-purpose applications, after Facebook Messenger, Poke and Rooms all came to mobile with a singular purpose.

Facebook Groups will be the next feature ported to a standalone experience, giving people who frequent groups a much smoother experience when creating, chatting and editing a group on Facebook.

Groups is not the most popular feature, but it has become useful when organizing events, parties and even trips. Having friends available on Facebook makes it even easier to invite, organize and update.

However, on the Facebook mobile app Groups has been relegated to the "More" button, meaning it takes two or three clicks to get onto the Groups main page. It is a rather clunky experience, and Facebook wants that to change.

Most of the core features on the new Facebook Groups app remain the same, for now. Facebook is obviously interested in making this a vastly different experience, which in turn should make Groups more active and vibrant.

Facebook Messenger is not that much different when it comes to aesthetics, but does offer a faster messaging experience. Rooms is a completely different style of app from Facebook, allowing users to discuss anonymously in rooms with others.

Other standalone apps, such as Paper,  try to improve the experience of the original app, by turning the Newsfeed into a Flipboard style newspaper. This has been hailed as the next step in re-inventing Facebook for mobile, and could be a reason for the social network removing popular features of the main app, in preparation for a big move to Paper.
