Facebook Updating Newsfeed To Stop Free Promotional Campaigns

(Photo : Reuters) After a year of planning, Facebook has finally opened an Artificial Intelligence Lab in Paris with an intention to work more closely with the AI community in France.

Social media network Facebook is not happy with companies creating promotional campaigns without paying for the privilege to appear on user's Newsfeed.

In the next big update to the social network, Facebook is looking to make sure marketing campaigns that are not sponsored do not show up as prominently on the Newsfeed, most likely by tuning down the relevance of Pages on Facebook.

The change will make it more likely for companies to sponsor ad-campaigns, to ensure they reach the maximum amount of users. Sponsored posts, videos and photos appear on Facebook user Newsfeed, alongside ads on the side of the browser.

Normally, promotional campaigns run for a few weeks, and if successful could be shared on Facebook for months afterward. The issue with Facebook's decision is that once a company stops paying for advertising, it could see a large decline in views.

It could also make Pages on social issues - like the recent conflict in Gaza - less prominent on users Newsfeed. Facebook has confirmed this will only come to a small number of Pages at launch, but it is still unknown how Facebook will identity companies.

Viral marketing has become a new way for companies to attract attention. There are plenty of examples coming just in time for Christmas, where companies will spend hundreds of thousands to get their ad in front of millions of users.

Facebook offers different types of promotional campaigns, all ranging in price and views. Facebook is also working hard on mobile ad optimization, recently announcing an API to use Facebook ads on third party applications.

Google is still the King when it comes to advertising, but Facebook isn't far behind. Google still has relevance through portals like YouTube and AdSense, even though its search ads are starting to become stale.

Facebook is making a few more changes to the Newsfeed and other aspects of the social network. On Android, users have found they are able to use Facebook's messenger service on the main app, instead of downloading the Facebook Messenger standalone app.
