Beijing Makes Strong Argument to Host 2022 Olympic Winter Games

China has plans to host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, and although it's competing with other countries, international skiing officials have been impressed by Beijing's snow facilities so far.
Multiple countries around the world completed bidding applications in 2013 in the hope of hosting one of the biggest sporting events in the world. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) then selected just three potential cities to host the Winter Games in 2022, which include Beijing, China; Oslo, Norway; and Almaty, Kazakhstan.

With Norway withdrawing its bid last month, that leaves just China and Kazakhstan as the two potential destinations, and Beijing is already receiving praise from international skiing officials, according to the capital's bid committee.
Beijing has been at a disadvantage ever since it first entered the race for the Winter Olympics, as many sports enthusiasts had concerns on whether they can count on China to stay true to winter sports tradition, especially skiing events. But the city has now made a strong claim following a visit from the International Ski Federation.
"Officials from winter sports international federations who have visited Beijing and Zhangjiakou all gave us credit for the venue planning, events arrangements and overall preparation so far. Their thumbs-up feedback has boosted our confidence," said Zhao Yinggang, deputy secretary-general of Beijing's bid committee.
The bid committee plans to implement skiing events in the snowy suburb city of Zhangjiakou, in which the terrain reportedly has potential to meet all the necessary qualifications. A majority of the competition will be located in Chongli, which consists of four popular ski resorts and nearly 100 skiing trails.
"It's actually a good location and very good terrain. It's almost there. It doesn't need that much before you could host the Olympics," said Uwe Beier, snowboard race director.
