Social Networks: Tumblr and Pinterest Show Most Growth, Facebook Shows Least

The world of social networks is always changing, what was once the students only club is now the most popular platform on the Internet, but also the one with the oldest average age.

Meanwhile, new competitors like Pinterest and Tumblr continue to grow at a rapid rate. New stats released by the Global Web Index point to these two social networks growing the fastest, pushing Instagram off the number one spot.

Tumblr seen a 120 percent increase in usage over the past six months - Pinterest hit 11 percent increase in active users. Both networks offer something a bit different from traditional social networks.

Facebook, on the other hand, is ranked last place in overall growth, at just 2 percent. Part of this is due to the 1.3 billion users on the social network already, making it a rather crowded service with not a lot of room to expand.

There has been rumors of Facebook becoming available to Chinese residents. CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently surprised a group of Chinese students, by speaking Mandarin. It will take more than that to convince the government, but it is a good start.

In terms of age difference, Snapchat - the largest mobile grower in the past six months - has a rather young audience in the mid-teens range, similar to Tumblr. Pinterest has a large active female audience, Facebook and LinkedIn have older audiences.

Facebook Messenger is the second largest grower on mobile, due to Facebook making it impossible to use messenger on mobile without the standalone app. LINE, Kakao Talk and Vine also gained rather substantial growth in the past six months.

Facebook also has one of the lowest average time spent for social networks. Tinder, the dating app, has 77 minutes per day, while Facebook barely manages to scrape 35 minutes of user's time per day. Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and Pinterest claim more for active users.

This does not mean Facebook is dead, but it certainly has some challenges keeping users on the social network and active. WhatsApp, the messaging company Facebook acquired for $19 billion, also gets more time per average user and is slowly creeping up to Facebook's 1.3 billion user record, with 650 million currently.
