OnePlus One Won't Receive Cyanogen in India

Cyanogen has snubbed OnePlus in India, partnering with regional favorite Micromax for some new smartphones.

Cyanogen is starting to spread its wings in the mobile industry. From the humble beginnings of a ROM-only Android fans were capable of using, the mod has now become famous worldwide as an excellent alternative to stock Android.

OnePlus One added Cyanogen 11S, a custom version of the mod, to the smartphone. It was one of the first manufacturers to actively work with the Cyanogen team on a first-party port. However, it appears the relationship between the two studios was not as close as once thought, with Cyanogen ditching OnePlus in India for the more popular Micromax.

Micromax has been winning over millions of Indian customers with cheap Android smartphones that do more than the typical low-end junk on the market. Cyanogen has an exclusive partnership with the mobile manufacturer in the country.

Android plays a huge roll in India and Cyanogen is seen as one of the best ROMs worldwide. Having a partnership with Micromax may extend the popularity of both brands in India. OnePlus is preparing its own Indian launch for the OnePlus One, but it will not run the custom CyanogenMod skin. Instead, OnePlus is cooking up its own design, and reports say they may even use stock Android.

Stock Android may be for the best, but early reports on Android One claim Indian users aren't that interested. The OnePlus One is also out of the price range for a lot of Indians, who want phones under $200.

OnePlus could still port CyanogenMod onto the OnePlus One in India, but it would not be updated thereafter, due to the exclusivity deal. Users could still manually flash updates onto the phone. Either way, it looks like OnePlus has hit another wall, but this time one not caused by its own internal issues.
