"The strategy for Xiaomi is to produce its smartphones in some of the bigger countries where it wants to grow." said Hugo Barra, Xiaomi's vice president for the international operations.
"The company is already in talks with electronics manufacturer Foxconn Technology Group. Production in India will likely begin in one to two years, and Brazil may start sooner."
The Indian market's increasing demand for smartphones has attracted the Chinese tech giant.
"It is the biggest market for us beyond China, it will someday be as big as China. We are coming into India with full force." said Barra.
"We know it's a market where it will pay off to really build a local brand in a full-on local operation. We've got to move faster than what we previously assumed." Barra added.
Reports say the move by Xiaomi aims to increase its smartphone sales to 100 million units by 2015.
According to previous reports, other countries where the Chinese company also intends to expand its market reach include Russia, Thailand, Turkey and Mexico.
