China's Internet Regulator Visits Facebook Campus

China's Internet regulator Lu Wei has visited a variety of different U.S. companies in his trip to Los Angeles, including Facebook, Apple and Amazon.

The details of the talks remain private, but considering Facebook is banned in China, it is rather interesting to see the Internet regulator in a meeting with CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook has been courting the Chinese government for the past few months. Zuckerberg recently held an interview at a prominent Chinese university, answering questions in Mandarin and even offering jobs to the students.

It is said that in the meeting with Lu Wei, Zuckerberg answered all questions in Mandarin and had Xi Jinping's book, "The Governance of China" on his desk, alongside a Xiaomi plushie.

Lu Wei has been resilient to Facebook in the past - claiming China would not look into unbanning the social network - due to conflicts of interest with the government.

Facebook has been labelled as one of the earliest to work with the U.S. surveillance agency, the NSA, on different operations to collect mass data. Facebook has refuted this, but other countries have taken note.

The lack of Facebook in China has made way for other social networks, like Sina Weibo and WeChat. Google also has no presence on the Chinese Internet - pulling out in 2010 - allowing Baidu to take over the search market.

Lu Wei also met with Apple's CEO Tim Cook, getting a chance to see the Apple Watch first hand. China has opened its doors to Apple in the past few years, Cupertino is no doubt interested to get the Apple Watch into the country without a scrap.

Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos was also seen with Lu Wei, although the discussion remain undisclosed. Amazon's main rival in China, Alibaba, has shown huge success on the New York Stock Exchange.

China's Internet firewall continues to be a burden for some U.S. companies who didn't court the Chinese regulators earlier. Now, China has all the power and it is up to the U.S. companies to really try hard to get unbanned.
