Telltale Games Working on Minecraft: Story Mode

Telltale's next game series will, oddly, be based in the Minecraft world.

Telltale Games and Mojang announced today a new episodic game series coming to PC, console and mobile coming in 2015. Named "Minecraft: Story Mode - A Telltale Game Series," the game will focus on the story behind the open world sandbox game.

Mojang has never written a story for Minecraft, allowing mods and gamers to create their own stories. There are characters like Steve, Herobrine and the various "mobs", which may play a part in Telltale's story, but there has never been a beginning and end.

Telltale will use different community ideas, and will use the same quick choice system available on its Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead series.

Minecraft: Story Mode will be separate from the original game and worked on by Telltale. The art style will be similar to Minecraft, but blended with Telltale's own engine, which could lead to some upset.

The news comes a few months after Microsoft acquired Mojang for $2.5 billion. Markus "Notch" Persson, the founder of Mojang, left the company following the acquisition.

Minecraft is an odd story for Telltale to work on, especially when there are plenty of stories in the gaming world with actual background and characters. There have been adventure map mods for Minecraft players on PC, but these tend to use Minecraft's blocks and redstone to create puzzles.

Creating a choice based story on Minecraft will be Telltale's hardest task, but considering the studio has had universal praise over the past few years, it might be able to crack Minecraft's story mode.
