Cheaper Xbox One Coming In 2015, Will Run On Smaller Processor

(Photo : Reuters ) Reports say a new Xbox One is coming in 2015, with a smaller, quieter and cheaper processor, to knock $50 off the price for Microsoft's console.

The Xbox One has not done nearly as well as Sony's competing console the PS4. Sales figures put the PS4 at 10 million, while the Xbox One only managed to sell 5 million.

There are plenty of reasons for the Xbox One having a tough time in the first year, the 180 turnaround on some of the features; the $150 price increase due to Kinect; the lower performance out of the two next-gen consoles, and more.

It looks like Microsoft wants to make sure in 2015 that the PS4 and Xbox One have equal footing when it comes to price. An AMD chip manager added on his LinkedIn (now private) profile that he would be working on a cost-efficient processor for the new Xbox One in 2015.

This comes alongside another leaked roadmap of AMD, showing that the console chip manufacturer is building new chips in 2015. These chips will reportedly be more energy efficient, less noisy and most importantly, cheaper to build, reducing the cost of the Xbox One.

Microsoft has had a good few months, with the quick launch into China grabbing a few thousand sales, which is more than in Japan, where the Xbox One continues to get the cold shoulder from an audience more interested in homegrown favorites Sony and Nintendo.

"Sunset Overdrive" also looks to be a killer for Microsoft, with plenty of game review sites praising it as one of the most delightful experiences in 2014. Microsoft has more games coming later this year, including "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" this week, sure to be a great seller on Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Console sales might not be going as fast as Microsoft would like, but they have overstepped the rather large hurdle left by ex-Chief of Xbox Dan Mattrick, who is now the CEO at Zynga. The acquisition of "Minecraft" might also lead to something new for Xbox One only, with reports claiming Microsoft is interested in Minecraft 2.
