Chromebook Update To Add "Ok Google" Functionality

Google might not be ready to merge Chrome OS and Android, but a part of Android is coming over to the web-based operating system in the next update.

Currently available in the Dev Channel build for Chrome OS, users are able to speak to the virtual assistant, similar to how they would on an Android phone.

Using the phrase "Ok, Google" to wake the service, users will be able to ask a variation of questions. Google may also be porting the Google Now cards to Chrome OS in the near future, to launch the full virtual assistant service.

Chromium project lead François Beaufort announced the new feature on Friday,

Try out the experimental new version of the "Ok Google" experience by toggling thechrome://flags/#enable-hotword-hardware flag. Restart your device, go to Chrome OS Settings and check "Enable "Ok Google" to start a voice search" to train your device to respond to the sound of your voice by saying three times "Ok Google". Having a virtual assistant on a Chromebook may be helpful, especially with the large education pull Google has attained in the past few years.

Google is not the only one adding its voice recognition platform onto the desktop, Microsoft will be bringing Cortana onto Windows 10, as shown in Build 9901, leaked earlier last week.

It is unclear if Apple plans to do the same with Siri for Mac OS X. The new integration between the two platforms, through Continuity, seems to imply most mobile features will work on desktop, if not now then in the near future.

The Chromebook is a leader in education, surpassing iPad sales in Q3 2014. Even still, it cannot hit over 1 percent of all PC sales worldwide, showing Google's inefficiency with the consumer market.
