Sony, Microsoft Gaming Platforms Hit With Online Issues

The PlayStation Network and Xbox Live are having trouble staying online through the holidays.
Sony's PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live are both experiencing server trouble, potentially due to an attack from hacking group Lizard Squad.
The two online networks have been unavailable on Christmas, and look to stay that way into Boxing Day. Both companies said they have technicians working hard to solve the current issues, but so far there has been no change.

Hacking group Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for the downtime, although it is unclear whether both networks are down simply due to the overwhelming server demand on Christmas day, as people set-up their new consoles.
Lizard Squad did say it would take down the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live on Christmas. In a tweet, Lizard Squad said "I have the nation on strings," and claimed it would stop the attack, if it gained enough retweets.
Last week, Anonymous hackers attempted to stop Lizard Squad, by revealing the identities of the hackers. It is unclear if Lizard Squad is acting alone or in a group, the tweet would seem to show a lone hacker.
The launch of "The Interview" online might have put more strain on the servers. Xbox Video and Sony's video service both sell the movie.
The controversial U.S. comedy was pulled from cinemas, after the #GOP hacking group warned of "9/11 scale consequences" for cinemas showing the movie. "The Interview" focuses on the assassination of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un.
Sony Pictures decided to launch it online instead, available on a variety of services. Numbers have not been made public, but the buzz around the movie seems to suggest massive viewing numbers.
Microsoft and Sony have not made clear announcements on when each service should be available. It may take a few days before new console owners are able to use the online features on their new consoles.
