Xbox Live Back Online, PlayStation Network Still Offline

The Christmas hack hit both big gaming platforms, but Sony PSN is still having trouble two days after going offline.

Microsoft has resorted power to its Xbox Live (XBL) service, after notorious hacker Lizard Squad took down the service on Christmas, alongside Sony's PlayStation Network (PSN).

Sony has had less success resorting power, even though the Twitter account for Lizard Squad claims the attack has stopped. PSN has been offline for over 50 hours, with no real signs of progress from Sony.

Lizard Squad used DDoS tactics to hit Microsoft and Sony's gaming servers with overwhelming amounts of traffic, taking them both offline on Dec. 25.

It is not the first time Lizard Squad has been able to take down XBL and PSN, previously, using the same methods to take down both services in summer. The hacker became active last month, threatening to take down a variety of gaming platforms.

Sony has been issuing updates all day, claiming it is working hard with technicians to restore the service. In a recent update, Sony states, "No ETA available yet, but our Team is working to fix it as soon as possible, thank you for your patience."

Having no online capabilities is a serious issue, especially for games like Destiny, FIFA 15 and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, each offer a popular multiplayer aspect. Destiny will not even open without a PSN login, meaning the game is useless until the servers are back online.

Sony has not released sales numbers, but it would not be a shock to see over 1 million PS4 sales in the last two months, most gifted to people for Christmas.

Some say the launch of "The Interview" online might have also caused issues on PSN, although, it is unlikely since other distribution services are not seeing server overload.

The likelihood of the same hacking group behind the Sony Pictures hack also being behind the PSN attack is unlikely, considering the different attack methods. The Sony Pictures attack focused on the removal of 100TB of data; the PSN attack focused on shutting down the server for a few days.
