Palm Resurfaces Through Mobile Maker Alcatel

Chinese manufacturer TCL, going under the brand Alcatel One Touch in the U.S., have revived Palm OS.

Palm OS has been dead for quite a while, but Alcatel One Touch might be looking to revive the mobile OS.

The palm.com domain redirects to mynewpalm.com, and some digging by WebOS Nation on the new domain shows a link to Alcatel One Touch U.S. president of operations Nicholas Zibell.

Alcatel currently makes budget Android smartphones, but may be inclined to look for other platforms. It already has smartphones running Windows Phone and Firefox OS. It is not clear what Alcatel wants with Palm OS, considering the platform is ancient compared to Android and iOS. But perhaps Alcatel sees a salvage project to win over the tech community.

LG acquired the rights to use WebOS, the offspring of Palm OS, in 2013. Instead of bringing it to phones, LG added the platform to all its smart TVs, and it has worked out for the best.

The scalability of Palm OS could allow Alcatel to put the software in all types of electronic devices. It is still questionable how successful a Palm OS device will be in the current market.

HP killed Palm OS on arrival, not giving developers the time to add new features to the OS. One of the most interesting platforms was crushed by incompetence at HP, but hopefully this new revival by Alcatel works for the best.
