Russian Soccer Player Gasan Magomedov Shot Down by Machine Gun Fire

Tragedy struck in the form of a machine gun, shooting down Russian soccer player Gasan Magomedov last Saturday. He was 20 years old when he passed away.

Magomedov was a soccer player for the Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.

Last Saturday, late in January 3, 2015, he was driving home in Russia's volatile North Caucasus. Then, his car was showered with a hail of machine gun fire. He died from his injuries while he was being transported to the hospital.

Magomedov was a talented soccer player who, at his tender age of 20, already played for the Russian National's Football League's Anzhi Makhachkala.

The club is located in the Dagestan region of North Caucasus. The area is known as home to internecine violence between Islamist militant groups and Russian security forces.

Throughout the investigations of the authorities, they are still unaware of any possible motive for the murder. A recent report said that an arrest has yet to be made.

This killing highlights how unstable certain parts of Russia are, as the country prepares to host the 2018 World Cup. The tournament will be hosted around 11 cities.

These cities are nowhere near North Caucasus though. The nearest of which is Volgograd, a city several hours away from Makhachkala.

Realizing the apparent dangers that Russia still has, German officials considered calling for Russia to be stripped of its hosting responsibilities after the country's alleged involvement in shooting down Malaysia Airlines flight 17 that crashed in Ukraine.

However, FIFA said that it is not considering moving the 2018 World Cup from Russia despite these occurrences.

The governing body says that the tournament "can achieve positive change" after several German lawmakers wanted FIFA to review the suitability of Russia hosting the World Cup.

While they said no to Germany's plea to strip Russia of their hosting rights, FIFA is currently investigating whether or not they won their right via bribery. The report is said to be delivered in September and will not be made public.
