Zia Segule, a 28-year-old American soldier assigned at Fort Bragg hoped to surprise his wife Tiffany with breakfast in bed on Friday morning, but instead of a smile and a "thank you," he got a bullet on his chest.

Segule wanted the breakfast in bed to be a surprise so he sneaked home at 10 a.m. to prepare it but unwittingly set off the burglar alarm. While approaching their bedroom door, Tiffany - who went back to sleep after Zia left at 8 a.m., was awakened by the alarm and thought an intruder was about to enter her room - fired a gun through the door, reports New Zealand Herald.

When Tiffany checked, she realized it was her husband she had shot, so she called 911 and he was rushed to the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in North Carolina. Zia is now in stable condition and was released on Friday afternoon from the hospital.

Antoine Kincade from the Fayetteville Police Department said that Tiffany could not be blamed for being quick on the draw because she felt she had to defend herself since there had been incidents of intrusions in their community.

A neighbor, Jose Estrella, also sympathized with the couple's morning romance-turned-tragedy incident.

"And being a female by herself, there are a lot of people out there doing harm, so you have to do what you have to do to protect yourself," said Estrella.

However, Estrella said if he were in a similar situation, he would not immediately pull the trigger.

The incident is quite similar what happened to South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, only the situation is reverse.

Pistorius went home and heard a noise inside the bathroom, so he fired shots through the door, and to his horror, the person whom he killed was his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The Olympian is now in jail for homicide.
