(Photo : Reuters) Microsoft confirmed Windows RT and the original Surface is dead.

Microsoft announced a huge amount of features at its Windows 10 event, including the Surface Hub, Windows Holographic and the majority of changes coming to Windows 10.

One thing we didn't hear about is how Windows RT would be affected by this, but Microsoft has released a quiet statement on the subject, essentially confirming Windows RT is dead.

Windows RT seemed like it was doomed from the start. A platform in-between tablet and PC, it made the holes in Windows 8 glaring without offering any of the advancement.

Microsoft will bring "some of the functionality" from Windows 10 to Windows RT devices, but the original Surface looks to be off Microsoft's update list.

The Surface RT sold around 900,000 units and not many customers were happy with the tablet as it was incapable of playing native desktop applications. Microsoft has major issues with stock when Surface RT launched, and have only made a profit with the Surface Pro 3.

Surface RT/2 will receive some updates, but like we said previously, it is not a full update to Windows 10. This will be disappointing for any new Windows RT buyers, who are now stuck with the operating system.

Microsoft has a rather lax attitude when it comes to supporting older hardware; when Windows Phone 8 launched, no smartphone from Windows Phone 7 were compatible, and Microsoft also had issue with Vista and 8 botched launches leading to lackluster sales.

Windows 8.1 users will be able to get Windows 10 for free and Windows 7 users will get it free for one year, although we still don't know the exact launch date for Windows 10. Windows Phone will be wrapped into Windows 10, and Microsoft is pushing for universal apps.
