Coming off a successful Kickstarter campaign into the second edition is hard, but Lockitron has announced the US$99 Bolt smart lock with various upgrades on the original.

The US$99 smart lock accessory allows users to unlock doors with their smartphone rather than keys.

Lockitron had issues with Kickstarter, including in-house parts failing, lackluster deadbolt removal tools and delays to the end product.

The startup tackled the issues head on with the new Bolt, costing almost half as much as the original US$179 smart lock. Lockitron decided to buy the best-in-class parts from off the shelves instead of in-house production and will offer guides on how to remove the deadbolt.

Lockitron Bolt will be available to all buyers, although there's no guarantee production will keep up with demand.

Hotels are already implementing this new technology alongside smart key-card technology, lowering the rate of hotel theft. Lockitron also wants this to become a consumer solution for every household.

The smart lock works from Bluetooth LE, but users will be able to buy a Lockitron Wi-Fi adapter for US$49 to let people in the household when at work. Lockitron also offers ways for certain people to unlock the door at certain times, and give other permissions to friends and family.

Lockitron currently does n't support 'Works With Nest' or 'HomeKit' platforms, making it a lone wolf in the connected world of devices. Nest already works with another smart lock provider, automatically turning on the heating when the owner unlocks the lock.
