Parents continue to tap home remedies to solve some health issues such as head lice. One such solution is covering the hair with mayonnaise and then covering the head with a plastic bag.

That solution was applied by the parents of an 18-month-old girl from Massachusetts. While it is not known yet whether the remedy does really kill lice or not, if the young patient is not attended to, it could instead kill the lice-sufferer.

That happened to the young victim who fell asleep while wearing the plastic bag that slipped over her head and suffocated the girl, said Sgt. John Delaney of the Massachusetts police, reports AP.

The police who responded to the call for help on Saturday in Springfield found the girl no longer breathing.

Both the police and the state Department of Children and Families are investigating the incident, but no charges have been filed yet.

Home remedy websites include mayonnaise as one of the solutions for head lice, which usually affects children. Other home products in the list, mostly found in the kitchen or bedroom, included garlic, salt, olive oil, baby oil, coconut oil, petroleum jelly, Tree Tea oil, white vinegar and sesame seed oil.

Viscosity properties of oil, found in mayonnaise, suffocates the head lice. The mayonnaise, covered with a shower cap or towel, is supposed to be left on the scalp for eight hours, after which the head is shampooed and combed to remove the remaining lice on the head.
