Beijing in Close Race With Almaty, Kazakhstan to Host 2022 Winter Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will make its final decision on whether to choose China's Beijing or Kazakhstan's Almaty to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in July. And while the Chinese capital has been ramping up its bid, past Olympic history could hinder its chances.

Beijing made great strides to promote the city's bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics during the winter season. The city has implemented several festivals such as the Iceworld Sports Land, which featured a 15,000 square-meter ice park.

Additionally, the city even hosted a portion of the Freestyle Skiing World Cup at the Bird's Nest stadium where some of the best aerialist in the world competed against each other.

But despite its promoting success as well as gaining the approval of several sports federations, past Olympic history is against Beijing's chances to host the event.

Beijing potentially being chosen to host the 2022 Winter Games would be an unprecedented achievement, as no other city has hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics throughout Olympic history.

The decision would also translate to three straight Olympic events being held in East Asia, as the 2018 Winter Games will be held in South Korea in addition to Tokyo hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics.

"That would normally seem totally inconceivable, not to mention Beijing just hosted the Summer Games in 2008 and it's not a 'typical' winter sports city," said Robert Livingstone, who follows the host-city competition for the website gamesbids.com.

For that reason alone, the IOC may be more willing to choose Kazakhstan to host the event, as it would mark the first time the Olympics would be held in Central Asia. And while Beijing is by far the more experienced sports city, Almaty did host the 2011 Asian Winter Games and will soon host the 2017 Winter World University Games.

An official decision won't be coming from the IOC until the end of July, but the organization certainly has its hands full and a decision could find itself coming down to the wire.
