Former Illinois police officer Drew Peterson is facing another charge for allegedly hiring an assassin to kill the lead prosecutor in the murder trial of his third wife.

As a result, Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Randolph County State Attorney Jeremy Walker filed on Monday a two-count criminal information against Peterson. The first count against the 61-year-old former police is solicitation of murder for hire and the second count is solicitation of murder, reports Fox News.

According to the charge, Peterson planned to have James Glasgow, state attorney for Will County, killed for spearheading the 2012 trial on the death of Peterson's third wife, Kathleen Savio. The former cop was convicted for Savio's death.

He is detained at the Menard Correctional Center, serving 38 years, and appeared on Monday at the Randolph County Courthouse. The preliminary hearing is scheduled on March 3.

Madigan and Walker are jointly prosecuting the case which involves the drowning in 2004 of Savio and the attempt to kill Glasgow, which happened between September 2013 and December 2014.

Authorities reopened the case on Savio's death after the 2007 disappearance of Stacy, Petersen's fourth wife. After Stacy disappeared in October 2007, police exhumed the remains of Savio who was discovered dead in a waterless bathtub at her house with her hair bloodied. Coroners then declared she died of accidental drowning, but the friend who discovered her corpse said at the Monday trial that there was a cut on Savio's head and bruises on her wrists.

Prosecutors' theory is that Petersen allegedly killed Savio, which he staged to make it look like an accident for fear he would be wiped out financially if their pending divorce settlement is approved. He said Stacy probably ran off with another man, but the police and her family do not believe Petersen's explanation.

In a statement, Glasgow said, "It is unfortunate that prosecutors sometimes must deal with allegations of this nature. However, in no way will a threat to my personal safety deter me from the important work I perform as the State's Attorney on behalf of Will County," reports WGNtv.

The murder case has been made into a TV movie and aired on January 21.
