PS4 Outsells Xbox One In January

Sony's PS4 is back on top of the console sales chart following a slight slump in November and December when Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox One to $349.

The price slash, however, wasn't enough to retain Microsoft's position at the top of the charts for three months, with Sony subsequently reclaiming its title.

Sony's console sales are down 30 percent in January, however, making the victory for Sony a little less sweet. It could also be argued the slight price increase to $399 for the Xbox One played a part in the loss of the lead in January for Microsoft.

The last update on total sales had the PS4 selling 18.5 million units. VGChartz puts that number at 19.1 million now. Sony's growth in console sales has been slowing after an excellent start.

One console seeing high growth year-on-year is the Wii U, with Nintendo reporting a 45 percent growth in sales from 2014 to 2015 in January. This is quite a large number considering the mediocre increases for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Nintendo can attribute a lot of the success to Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros and other new exclusives for the Wii U, alongside a good number of 2015 launch titles to keep Nintendo fans happy.

The console market is still looking for a real seller. Destiny failed to win over millions of fans like Activision and Bungie hoped, Titanfall was played and forgotten and Watch_Dogs, which also came out on PC, missed expectations.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt could be a big console seller (despite it being advertised primarily for PC), alongside Tom Clancy's The Division and the potential launch of Fallout 4 or Elder Scrolls at Bethesda Softworks' E3 event.
