The close friend disclosed that Emwazi grew up in West London and flew to Syria in 2012 and eventually joined ISIS as the decapitator of American, British and Japanese captives of the extremist terror organization.

Emwazi, who is in his mid-20s, was known for wearing stylish clothes but adhered to Islamic laws, including praying at a mosque in Greenwich.

A second confirmation on Jihadi John's identity came from a representative of a human rights group in the UK, who was in contact with Emwazi before he went to Syria.

Asim Quershi, the research director of the right group CAGE cited the extreme resemblance of Jihadi John to Emwazi as the basis of his confirmation.

He arrived in Dar es Salaam in May 2009 together with two friends named Omar and Abu Talib, but they were detained by police and deported.

Emwazi then went to Amsterdam where an MI5 officer allegedly accused him of attempting to enter Somalia to join al-Shabab, a militant group allied with the al-Qaeda.

Emwazi returned to Britain where he met Quershi. He then moved to Kuwait, his country of birth, and worked for a computer firm.

He was detained in London in June 2010 when he came to UK to marry his girlfriend. Quershi doesn't know how he managed to leave for Syria.

In September, FBI Director James Comey said that by using voice analysis and interviews with former hostages, the FBI has identified Jihadi John, but he did not reveal the identity of the beheader.

Meanwhile, the FBI took into its custody on Wednesday three men in Brooklyn who allegedly were planning to go to Syria and join ISIS. They have posted online messages about plans to place a bomb on Coney Island and shoot cops.

Two of them, aged 24 and 30, are from Uzbekistan and one is a 19-year-old from Kazakhstan who live in Brooklyn. If they fail to join ISIS, the three plan to return to New York and engage in terrorism.

NBC identified the 24-year-old as Akhor Saidakhmetov, based on a criminal complaint that he planned to buy a machine gun and kill police officers if his plan to join ISIS won't push through. The 30-year-old is Abror Habibov who helped fund Saidakhmetov's plan to join ISIS.

Authorities have filed conspiracy to provide materials support to a terror group against the three men.
