Twitter Experimenting eith Autoplay Ads on iOS

Twitter is exploring autoplay video advertisements on iPhone and iPad in a move to bump advertising engagement. It follows Facebook's own autoplay videos launched last year to huge success, adding 300 percent more engagement on videos.

Twitter autoplay will be tested on select iOS candidates. Twitter didn't mention what users would be selected, although it's most likely those with the latest version of the app and who own the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Twitter will select the videos from its largest advertisers. The video will autoplay as soon as the user scrolls over it but will be on mute until the user presses the video.

Autoplay videos were originally criticized when Facebook launched them last year but became common on the social network after a while. Twitter will have less of a hard time trying to convince users since most Twitter users own a Facebook account.

If the autoplay videos work -- which they most likely will -- Twitter will look to implement them across all platforms. It might even look to open the autoplay videos to more than advertisers, allowing Vines and short personal videos to autoplay on the Twitter feed.

Unlike Facebook, Twitter hasn't mastered the art of advertising and is still at a net operating loss. It needs to find new ways to muster advertising revenue since the adoption rate for the microblogging site is starting to drop.

Twitter has nearly 300 million active users on the platform and engagement figures have always been a high point. Now, the company must figure out how to make the high engagement numbers mean something in money terms.
