Cowell, the X Factor boss has a lot to say with regards to the 22 year old's recent issue of a solo career and Louis Tomlinson's squabble with collaborator Naughty Boy and One Direction's prospective career as a foursome.
"He's a fantastic singer. He's got to get his head together a little bit, he needs some time on his own, as he said to be a normal 22-year-old, which he's gonna have," said Cowell, at a press launch for Britain's Got Talent in London.
"I've always said to all of them, 'The future is bright for all of you, depending on what you want to do'. We've always hoped that One Direction would stay together for a long time and my hunch is it still will," Cowell further added.
Cowell admitted that he was surprised that the band lost a member so quickly, barely five years after they were discovered on the show. However, the TV personality is optimistic about One Direction's future as a foursome.
"I wasn't expecting it to happen so quickly. You just have to deal with it. As long as the boys want it and I think they do, they will continue to be successful. They've not got over it but they've got used to it," said Cowell.
Cowell also addressed the feud between Malik and his former bandmates, following Louis Tomlinson's row with Naughty Boy on Twitter.
"You can't work together for this long if you're not friends. That was just a little spat that happened, people were getting a bit emotional. The only thing that matters is that the boys are happy, everyone is a different place at the moment," replied Cowell.
