"Dr. Oz has repeatedly shown disdain for science and for evidence based medicine, as well as baseless and relentless opposition to the genetic engineering of food crops," stated in the letter addressed to Columbia University's Dean of Health Sciences and Medicine.
The letter also emphasized on Dr. Oz's veracity being questioned as he continuously promotes 'quack treatments' and other alternatives with the purpose of monetary gain.
Oz is a practicing cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon and holds a position in the Columbia University as a vice-chair in the Department of Surgery.
With a busy schedule, Oz manages to find time to work as a TV personality in his own show, The Dr. Oz Show. The show promoted the use of alternative medicine as a means of maintaining good health.
However, most medical experts claim that only 46% of the health advice in the show can be vouched by science and in the vast field of medicine.
The letter was created by a physician in the Hoover Institution, which was also co-signed by other nine physicians.
The letter was concluded with a statement that emphasized on the doctors' concern for the public being misled by Dr. Oz's non-conventional beliefs towards medicine. Dr. Oz holds a prestigious position at an educational institution that teaches medicine and his duty should be to promote health through evidence-based medicine.
A representative of Columbia University released a statement in response to the doctors' letter expressing that the University upholds the principle of academic freedom and promoting the faculty's freedom of expression of imparting their knowledge in public.
