(Photo : Reuters ) Following a rape charge on an Uber driver, the mobile taxi service is implementing new safety precautions.
Uber has reportedly bid $3 billion for Nokia's Digital Mapping Service - "Here." Other competitors in this bidding war include Samsung, Tencent and Yahoo.
Nokia's "Here" is a direct competitor of Google Maps and Uber is apparently trying to station itself as a standalone entity. Uber is also in the process of producing self-driving cars, whereas on the other hand, Google is looking at making driverless taxi services, according to NY Times.

The Next Web reports that apart from Samsung, Yahoo and Tencent plus other companies like Facebook and Microsoft are also interested in buying "Here." Negotiations are on, but a deal with any company is still to be finalized. However, Uber's recent multi-billion offer would surely bring renewed interest in the digital mapping service. Nokia holds more than 80 percent of the market share for the built-in car navigation services and so, according to reports, tech companies are sparing no effort to acquire the digital mapping service.
A number of companies are designing driverless car, which depend heavily on up-to-date digitally mapped road data. Hence, it is no wonder that "Here" is commanding such a huge price. Other companies like FedEx and Amazon also rely on mapping data to run their global logistical operations in an effective and efficient manner.
It is said that despite the fact that Google Maps has about 10 times more users than "Here" yet, it is very high on the demand list because of its niche factor. Nokia dominates heavily in the automobile mapping domain and other companies are interested in acquiring the service, at whatever cost. The headquarters of "Here" are in Berlin and the service employs more than 6,000 people all over the world who ensure that their digital mapping service is also updated.
Apple and Google tried a lot to make inroads into the automobile mapping domain but they have not succeeded till now.
