Apple Watch has this special feature that monitors heart rate on the wearer. But we cannot avoid the fact that some users have tattoos on their wrist and it causes some trouble into the watch. It seems that ink tattoos can block the watch sensors and it cannot do its job in monitoring the person's health.

One person from Reddit mentioned that when an Apple watch is place on the wrist with a tattoo, the auto-lock would engage which probably indicates that it cannot recognize that is is being worn. A comparison is also conducted on the heart-rate monitor being placed over a tattooed and nontattooed skin and the darker the ink used, the more problem arises.
Just like any other smart watch like, Basis Peak, Fitbit Surge and other devices worn on the writs to track fitness, Apple Watch also use the light technology that shines into skin to measure pulse rate. The light that strikes on the skin are targeting the wrist's blood vessel and the device will analyze how much light is reflected back. In this process the watch can detect the changes in the volume of blood every time your heart beats and pumped blood all over the body. The light being used here is the Led light that flashed many time in accordance to heartbeat, according to The Verge.
Apple's support website speaks about the issue that any changes on skin like permanent tattoos can affect the performance of the sensors. The ink, pattern saturation of some tattoos can block the sensor and so it shows inconsistent reading of your heart rate.
In case of any issue on the use of heart rate monitor because of the reasons mention above, users can use external heart-rate monitor like chest strap that can be connected to Apple Watch via Bluetooth.
iMore stated that so far, not all tattoos can block the sensors of this watch. Those lighted-colored tattoos did not show any complication with the device. If you are planning to purchase this device, make sure you tested it on your tattoos if you have one on the wrist.
