CNN reported May 12 that the healthy baby boy Isaac Michael Hall weighed 13 pounds and 10 ounces and was 25 inches long. He was born May 7.
According to eMedicine Health, 7.5 pounds is the average birth weight for babies and that although the average length of full-term babies is 20 inches, the normal range is 18 inches to 22 inches.
Michelle Hall said that while she noticed that her belly was very big and that she used to joke around that she has been nine months pregnant for the last three months, she did not expect such a big baby.
The new mom, fresh from a C-section delivery, added that her friends speculated that she was having twins, CNN reported. Dr. Andrew Sword, the physician who assisted in Hall's delivery, was quoted by CNN as saying that he and the doctors at West Penn Hospital have "never seen a baby this size." Sword said that he asked all the pediatricians at the hospital and confirmed that baby Hall had set a record.
WGN TV ran a segment on Hall's birth, adding that the baby boy was actually born nearly a week early and that the little boy was already wearing clothes that are made for a six-month baby.
According to Guinness World Records, the title of heaviest baby at birth is a boy born to Sig. Carmelina Fedele in Aversa, Italy in September 1955. The newborn weight 22 pounds and 8 ounces. Guinness noted that a boy weighing 22 pounds at birth, born in 1979, also held the record. The newborn, who unfortunately died 11 hours later, was born in Seville, Ohio.
