Bristol Palin and former United States Marine Dakota Meyer's weekend wedding has been called off, as announced by Bristol's mother, Sarah Palin on Monday.

The 51-year old former governor of Alaska took to her Facebook to confirm that the couple will not be tying the knot next weekend. Sadly, she shared that Bristol Palin and Dakota Meyer have told their loved ones that the wedding celebration "planned for May 23 will not be held."

The pair added that they "could not be more thankful for the love and support of family and friends while preparing for the wedding."

However, she also announced that both the couple's families will still have a get-together for a simple barbecue in Kentucky, where the wedding venue was at, to "celebrate life."

Sarah Palin also added a message from her daughter Bristol Palin, in which she shared that she and Meyer have discussed their previous relationships before they got engaged.

She slammed reporters for failing to disclose to readers that Meyerwas officially divorced several years ago and asked readers to disregard false and dramatic stories that only stir up controversy.

"We have faith that our privacy will be respected at this time," Bristol Palin said.

Previous reports claimed that Dakota Meyer, who married Cassandra Wait in May 2008, is still married and had attempted to hide his marriage from Bristol.

Neither Bristol Palin nor her mom had said if the wedding has only been rescheduled or if the couple had decided to end their engagement.

Bristol Palin, 24, and Dakota Meyer, 26, officially announced that were engaged to marry in March this year. The recipient of the U.S. Medal of Honor expressed his excitement about the wedding, even counting down the days to their much-awaited wedding on his Instagram account.

Bristol Palin also took to her social media websites to share a photo of her kissing Meyer, which featured her engagement ring.

This is the second time that Bristol Palin's engagement has been called off. She was formerly engaged to the father of her son, Tripp, but they ended the engagement in March of 2009.
