The law enforcement authorities in Morocco still use torture practices according to human rights group Amnesty International. Torture practices are still widely used such as the abuse of protesters, the beatings of suspect confessions, simulated drowning and the rape of detainees with objects, the human rights group said in a report.

According to Yahoo News, there are about 173 cases of abuse and torture practices in Morocco since 2010 but the government of Morocco dismissed the report and findings. Moreover, a former student-activist Abderrazak Jkaou who was arrested in the year of 2012 said that the police beat him before being detained in the station. "They practiced the worst kinds of torture. They handicuffed and they beat me," Jkaou said in the report.

Amnesty International director for Middle East and North Africa said in a report by The New York Times that torture practices in Morocco becomes common. "There is a gap between what's on paper and what's in practice. Torture is not systematic but common. The safeguards that exist currently are not being implemented," he said.

The human rights group report "Morocco: Shadow of impunity: Torture in Morocco and Western Sahara" presented testimonies from the survivors of torture as reported by the group. Last year, it can be noted that the government of Morocco criticized the group over its anti-torture campaign and Mustafa al-Ramid, the Minister of Justice and Freedoms of Morocco, said that the inclusion of Morocco in the list of countries which practice torture did not tally with the efforts and the real human rights situation in Morocco.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Sektaoui, the director of Amnesty Morocco, said that the human rights group reported the case on Morocco because the country is influential in North Africa, not because Morocoo has the worst case of human rights abuses, Yahoo News reported. "Positive development in Morocco would have an influence on neighboring countries in North Africa and the Middle East," Sektaoui said. "Morocco has a big opportunity to be a leader in the region in the fight against torture," he added.
