Los Angeles Lakers Introduces Byron Scott as New Head Coach

A parade of past Showtime greats marched into the Lakers' practice gym shortly before Byron Scott could even utter a word in his introductory news conference Tuesday.
"Showtime's back, baby," a smiling Earvin "Magic" Johnson greeted the new head coach while pulling Scott into a big hug. Alongside him were two other National Basketball Association (NBA) legends and former Lakers teammates, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jamaal Wilkes.

Scott, who as a player won three championship rings with the Los Angeles Lakers during the Showtime era, has been named the seventh former Laker and the 25th head coach of the franchise, which suffered one of its worst season's last year.
Johnson, Abdul-Jabbar and Wilkes came to the news conference in order to show their support for their fellow teammate and congratulate the Laker organization.
"We're just excited for what Byron will bring to the table and get back to playing Laker basketball," said Johnson.
Scott, 53, has long been considered by the Lakers for the head-coaching job after the team parted ways with Mike D'Antoni, who resigned in April after one of the worst seasons for LA.
Mitch Kupchak, general manager of the Lakers thanked Scott for his patience over the last six or seven weeks and also acknowledged that it was always clear to them that "Byron was always our first choice," Kupchak said.
Scott said his dream of coaching the Lakers came true and he's just eager to get to work. He talked about his plans of reviving the team's winning spirit and winning championships.
"This organization is all about championships. Period," Scott said. "If you're winning, it's contagious; if you're losing, it's contagious ... The first day of training camp is all about winning."
Scott further said that Kobe Bryant will play a big part in the rebuilding of the team, who suffered one of the worst seasons last year with 27-55 and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2004. He wants Bryant to move up as point guard and expressed excitement of teaming up again since the 1996-1997 season when Bryant was a rookie.
"I'm looking forward to coaching Kobe," Scott said. "I think we're on the same page as far as how we think about this game and how it should be played."
Scott has coached for four teams in the NBA for 13 years, calling the shots for Cleveland in 2010 just after LeBron James made his infamous "The Decision." The Cavs fired him after the shortened season in 2013.
