After a year of planning, Facebook has finally opened an Artificial Intelligence Lab in Paris with an intention to work more closely with the AI community in France. Future plans include major investments in AI.

Facebook, a technology firm best known for its social media networking plans has recently confirmed the inauguration of a dedicated artificial intelligence facility in Paris, according to Stuff. The move also indicates that the company has plans of strengthening its foothold in the European markets. Opening a centre in Paris also means that the company has openly confessed to its interest in the Artificial Intelligence Community in France.

In an official statement issued, Facebook has said that the reason to choose Paris for its expansion is its closeness to France, home to some of the best researchers in the world. Another report on BBC confirms that Facebook plans to work on ambitious projects, which will also include natural language processing, speech recognition as well as image recognition.

Commenting on the recent controversy regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence, Facebook's chief technology officer Mike Schorepfer said that the threat had clearly been blown out of proportion. Adding further, Yann LeCun, who heads up Facebook's AI research, said that machines could be made as intelligent as man desired and there was no need to fear the power of Artificial Intelligence. He also said that the development of human level artificial intelligence was still in a nascent stage and so it was too early to formulate the ethics.

Meanwhile, Facebook said that its ulterior motive of investing in Artificial Intelligence services is simply to make the services like newsfeed, photos, search, etc. more interactive for the users. Currently, Facebook has more than 1.4 million users registered globally. Of late, Facebook has been getting a lot of unnecessary attention from the European authorities because of its habit of collecting and handling users data in suspicious way.

It can be noted that Facebook is not the only technology firm investing in Artificial Intelligence as even Google has been aggressively working on this front, displaying its latest project at the recently concluded I/O Developers conference.
