After four-division champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) quickly dispatched the flimsy challenge of Australian Daniel Geale in their Middleweight championship match on Saturday, speculations abound that next in line for the Puerto Rican legend would be former light middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) of Mexico.

The 34-year-old Cotto, who floored Geale twice inside four rounds of the lopsided match, was already negotiating for a fight with the hard-hitting Mexican through Top Rank promotions when talks suddenly turned sour as the light middleweight champion seemed to want to position himself first before accepting the big-time fight.

The Boxing Voice's Mario Mungia reported that Cotto recently left Top Rank for Jay-Z's sports promotional firm, Roc Nation Sports, who at present had organized the bout against Geale. This move is perceived by boxing pundits to be the precursor to the much-anticipated fight with Canelo.

In the same article, Mungia revealed that HBO boss Ken Hershman thinks that Cotto-Canelo is looming, even before the Puerto Rican steps in the ring with the glass-jawed Australian.

Consequently, the fight clearly showed that Cotto is way above the class of Geale, something that many fans found off-putting, and a showdown with Alvarez is absolutely needed as soon as possible to convince everyone of his championship-caliber status.

Manny Pacquiao's famous and multi-titled coach Freddie Roach had been in Cotto's corner since his comeback fight against Delvin Rodriguez in October 2013. Previously, he suffered the first back-to-back losses of his career against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Austin Trout in 2012.

Many thought that Cotto would retire after the tragic loss to Trout, but the Puerto Rican brawler credits Roach for bringing back confidence in him, as reported in Opening Round.

Since being trained by Roach, Cotto has now won three straight fights in impressive fashion and he hopes to continue that streak to whomever is next for him to battle.

Rumors have also surfaced that aside from Alvarez, a possible matchup for Cotto would be Kazakhstan's rising star Gennady Golovkin. Although Fansided's Jack Jorgensen wrote that Cotto-Canelo would have to happen first, and the winner of that mega-fight may be forced to face the heavy-handed GGG next.
