The growing popularity of Xiaomi's fitness band has made it the second largest player in the wearable technology category, where analysts are calling it the unlikely success for the five year old smartphone maker.
Just a year ago, technology giant Xiaomi introduced a fitness band priced at 79 Yuan, and ever since, the new product is creating ripples in the global wearable products category. According to reports on China Daily, the growing popularity of the thirteen dollar fitness band has made Xiaomi the second largest player in the wearable technology category; however, the leadership position comes as a pleasant surprise for the brand owners as well as market analysts. This is because the fitness band is barely a year old and comes with basic features. There are many big names like Fitbone Inc. and Jawbone Inc. who are also into manufacturing such gadgets. However, the formula adapted by Xiaomi is quite basic and therefore the success was unexpected.

According to another report on Technology News China, Xiaomi confirmed to shipping 2.8 million fitness bands in a short period of three months, spanning from January to March. This number is quite huge and accounts for one-quarter of the total exports for wearable technology gadgets.
Meanwhile, Fitbit continued to lead the market with a shipment figure of four million gadgets. This was confirmed according to the industry analysis report released by International Data Corp; however, this report did not take into account the shipment of Apple smartwatches. This is because Apple started the sales in April this year.
On the other hand, Xiaomi started sale of its Mi bands in the second quarter of 2014 and still managed to register impressive figures. In fact, Xiaomi started the year with a blast as it successfully broke the one million device records with its Mi fitness bands, as indicated by the report published by International Data Corp.
While the fitness band by Xiaomi is not as fancy as what other big names are offering, the company is leaving no stone unturned to popularize the product on social media platforms. Additionally, the low price tag of the product is also working in its favor by allowing more people to become first time wearers.
