When a young player enters the tour and does well in the grand slams, you'd expect that player to break records, rise to the top, and stay consistent. But it's not the case for Eugenie Bouchard who had a strong 2014 with a WTA tournament win and a Wimbledon Final plate under her belt. This year, she only had one notable performance - reaching the Australian Open quarterfinals. But it all went downhill from there and now she's out of the most prestigious of all grand slams, a heartbreaking first round loss at the hands of a Chinese qualifier.

There are those who firmly believe that she's nothing more than a media darling thanks to her good looks. Some also believe that she's not even a good player and her wins came from facing opponents who are not playing so well. If there's one glimmer of hope, however, it's not from her legion of fans or the indomitable Genie Army present in most of her big matches. It is from Bouchard herself who continues to believe that there is a way out of this so-called sophomore slump.
"Maybe I am going through what all of you are telling me I'm going through," she said as reported by ESPN. "So maybe I'll lose another five matches in a row -- but I'll be fine with that. It's just about believing that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I hope that doesn't sound too depressing. I'm just fine."
It's inevitable for the world to expect much from the young Canadian. She was supposed to win against Duan Ying-ying, the 26-year old Chinese who, before the match, has never won against a player ranked in the top 100, or get that backhand in to stay on the first set, or even serve well and not commit ten double faults. But she didn't and it's okay. After all, she's only human and that excuse is enough to give her the respect she needs.
Set aside controversies, violations and we're all looking at a 21-year-old who has yet to learn more about life. There is hope indeed for Bouchard, and if she hangs on to it, maybe we all should too.
