The Minnesota Vikings and their MVP running back Adrian Peterson have recently agreed to restructure the remaining three years of the latter's contract that includes cash bonuses and additional provisions for more security in case of injuries, according to USA Today.

More importantly, the 30-year-old's deal now comes with a clause that compels Minnesota to settle his status with the team "before the first wave of free agency ends each of the next two years."

This part of the agreement is important in case the Vikings would no longer want to keep the six-time Pro Bowler, which would be highly unlikely, as other teams will have not yet finalized their rosters by that time giving him the opportunity to negotiate.

The 2012 NFL MVP has three years and $46 million left on his six-year deal signed with the team in September 2011. The contract was revised into $44 million for the same period, but it now included lots of full injury guarantees until 2017.

Yahoo Sports reported that the Vikings proved their regard for Peterson's value after going through the contract amendment. The eight-year veteran had been contemplating about his future with the franchise this offseason, and this restructuring reportedly gave him the peace of mind that he so desired.

The report also said that Minnesota is looking forward to the tandem of Peterson and their second-year starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who had never played with the three-time First Team All-Pro last season because of the former's domestic issues.

Bridgewater was sensational in the second half of last season for the Vikings, especially in the team's final five games, and head coach Mike Zimmer is reportedly enthusiastic about the possibilities of the two players finally sharing the field together.

Because of his off-the-field problems last season, Peterson lost around $10 million in salaries and endorsements, as per the NFL's official website.

Rumors emerged after he re-joined the team last June that the two-time NFL rushing leader admitted that he was determined to fix his personal life and safeguard a long-term career with the franchise. This contract revision seems to be the first step toward his goal.

Some parties criticized Peterson for allegedly trying to "squeeze more guaranteed money" from Minnesota, but many analysts believe that his standing as "the greatest running back of his generation" gives him the right to secure such a deal.
