Former undisputed world middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler took his sentiments to social media and broadcasted his desire to see a Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Gennady Golovkin fight in September.

Boxing News 24 reported that the 61-year-old Hall of Famer believes that the pay-per-view king should face the current WBA and IBO middleweight champion for his supposed to be last fight before retirement this fall.

Hagler, who expressed his opinion via a series of posts in his official Twitter account on Thursday, said that if his contemporary and fellow legend four-division champion Roberto Duran could fight bigger men than himself, then Mayweather should also do the same to prove that he is one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Mayweather is reported to fight two-time welterweight champion Andre Berto on September 12 and has received a lot of criticisms from boxing fans and pundits alike. Forbes' columnist Josh Katzowitz called the presumed Berto fight a "major disappointment" and a "waste of time" especially after the pound-for-pound champ had just beaten Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao in the wrongly labelled "Fight of the Century" last May.

The Mayweather-Berto clash is intended to be shown on free TV, attesting the notion that it would not be a good enough PPV attraction and Money's brand and reputation might suffer if his camp pushed through with their tradition.

However, even if it would be free, all indications suggest that the fans are not happy with Floyd's choice. Along with Hagler, most boxing enthusiasts wanted to see him step into the ring with the 33-0 Kazakh wrecking ball.

Meanwhile, uncle Jeff Mayweather defended his nephew's pick to fight Berto this fall. In an interview with On The Ropes Boxing's Jenna J, the elder Mayweather insisted that Berto is a world champion and then questioned the critics why can't Money fight Berto while "anybody else can?"

"When it comes to Floyd, everything changes," Jeff said. "The opponent changes, the status of the opponent, everything changes. No one else would drop down to fight anybody else, but they would do that for Floyd because of the money they'll make."

While a lot of fans are turned off by Floyd's well-known ducking of the best available opponents, there is also a small portion of hardcore Mayweather fans that agree with his uncle Jeff's point. It is but smart for the unbeaten American to preserve his record than risking a loss, and possibly his health, just to prove to everyone that he is indeed the best.
