If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then Fan Bingbing is making herself quite clear when she declared that immorality is in the eye of a pervert--at least in the scene where her character in the "Lady of the Dynasty" was interacting intimately with co-star Leon Lai while on a horse. Screengrabs of the "sex scene" made rounds on the Internet and caused a feast for concerned and interested netizens.

News of the online uproar reached the actress, including the remark of one social media user saying that a number of Fan's movies usually involves erotic scenes. The actress reportedly disliked the comment and defended the integrity of her acting.

"If you are a pervert, you will see nothing else but that no matter what is presented in front of you. I am an actress. I portray a person, not a deity. All of us have emotions and desires. It's a normal thing," Yahoo! quoted Fan.

In an earlier statement, Fan noted that accepting projects that require her to step out of her comfort zone is normal and essential to her professional growth. For her, giving her best in acting even if it calls for scenes that may reveal skin is not "too much." To quell the heated discussion about the possible repercussion on her image and her relationship with beau Li Chen,  Fan lightly noted that she will inform him in advance if she should be involved in another sensual acting.

However, critics were not easily appeased as there were calls for the suggestive scenes to be cut from the the film. According to a My Paper report, several Chinese netizens tagged the horse scene as a "bad influence on the young [sic]." Fan's agency simply denied the report and called the allegation "ridiculous."

"Lady of the Dynasty" is not the first of Fan's projects that was put in question for controversial display of skin. In April, her TV series "Empress of China" faced censorship when aired in Singapore. Instead of cutting scenes with women in provocative clothes, pieces of fabric were digitally patched on the costumes to cover up the women's cleavages. Despite the plunging necklines being reportedly characteristic of the Tang era fashion, this was still viewed as "unhealthy images for minors."
