"Where is Vanness?" That was the general question occasionally punctuating a series of "happy birthday" greetings on Cheo's Instagram posts. The absence of her husband from the pictures yet again stirred speculations that the couple might be in another trying times of their marriage. In one of her videos, Cheo was seen singing Joey Yung's Cantonese song "Who Will Love Me"  at a KTV. Among comments complimenting Cheo's voice were messages that read, "Didn't know you speak Cantonese so well! [S]tay strong girl!" and "Deeply hope that you and Vanness r [sic] back tgt [sic]."

In August 2014, Wu surprised Cheo with a fairy tale-themed party few days after her 32nd birthday, filling the venue with colorful balloons with some in the shape of a mermaid and a unicorn. The Taiwanese celebrity shared the happy event on Weibo with a picture of him and Cheo kissing and wrote, "The best way to love her is to treat everyday like her birthday. Happy birthday!" His wife replied by thanking him for the grand gesture and calling him the "best hubby ever."

A day before her 33rd birthday, Cheo posted a quote that stated, "True love & loyal friends are two of the hardest things to find." One netizen with username "ttslof" reminded Cheo that she already found both and stay happy, while another with username "viaxpurifico" advised, "[D]on't know if you've found either but all I can say is do what makes YOU happy . . . live your life for you!"

Early in July, Wu and Cheo's consecutive online spat made it to the headlines and rekindled the seemingly undying rumor of divorce. Cheo posted a long and ambiguous caption wherein she opened up about the years of having to put up with "lies and deceit." Days later, Wu posted an edited promotional picture of his movie "Monk Comes Down the Mountain" with the quote "If I'm not happy when I'm alive, then when else should I be?" In 2014, the couple have also been embroiled in an online argument where Cheo was slammed by netizens for using expletives.
