Boxing News & Rumors: Shawn Porter Wants Winner Of Canelo-Cotto Next, But WBC Insists On GGG

Former IBF welterweight titlist Shawn "Showtime" Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) recently expressed his desire to face whoever will be the winner of the Saul Alvarez-Miguel Cotto middleweight title bout on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

However, the World Boxing Council had insisted that it has to be the reigning WBA (Super), IBO, and WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) who should face the winner of the fight and not Porter.

Boxing News 24 reported that according to Showtime's father and trainer Kenny Porter, his son specifically wants to fight Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) if he is able to beat the defending WBC, Lineal, and The Ring middleweight king Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) in November. In fact, even if Canelo loses to the Puerto Rican legend, the elder Porter said that they would still want a shot at the Mexican brawler as he said that it would still be a potential blockbuster matchup.

Then again if Alvarez wins over Cotto, Porter would have to wait in line for his chance as WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman asserted in a recent interview with Boxing Scene that the winner of the Alvarez-Cotto encounter "must fight Gennady Golovkin then they can do whatever they want."

Reports were out that the only thing keeping the said November fight from happening was the non-inclusion of an immediate rematch clause that Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions would want to have in the contract.

Cotto was reportedly not fully sold about the idea of fighting Canelo once again if ever he beats him, and so his camp was not agreeable with the stipulation.

But with Sulaiman's words, it is clear that an immediate rematch cannot happen as GGG is the mandatory challenger of whoever will be the champion.

Still, Cotto or Alvarez could relinquish his WBC belt if they would like to have a rematch, which as was just mentioned the former is not keen on accepting. Porter's only hope of facing Canelo early next year would be Cotto defeating the Mexican.

Meanwhile, Showtime's camp is reportedly arranging a fight with current WBA welterweight champ Keith Thurman this last quarter of the year in preparation for the Canelo fight in 2016, as per The News Hub.
