The Dallas Cowboys lost yet another preseason game, this time against the San Francisco 49ers. As early as it is in the preseason, the Cowboys are only looking at 2 things: what their new pieces have to offer in terms of valuable playing time in the regulard season, and making sure key players like Tony Romo remain healthy. Still, this match was painful to watch. What were some positives from this game?

Showers Has Potential

One of the issues the Dallas Cowboys have is the lack of a decent quarterback behind Tony Romo. If ever Romo were to become injured, the Dallas Cowboys season would fall apart in an instance. However, this preseason game showed promise in the backup quarterback department. Jameil Showers in particular, was the most intruguing to watch. While Dustin Vaughan and Brandon Weeden played like solid quarterbacks all throughout this preseason, Showers has shown that he deserves a spot on the Cowboys roster, at least for the next 2 games. While the sample size for Showers remains incredibly limited and it would be hard to see a 4th string quarterback make it to the final roster, Showers has impressed with his improvisational abilities in-game.

Dallas Defensive Line Shows Promise

One of the question marks the Cowboys face this season is whether their defense is elite enough to hang with the best of them. Against the 49ers, the Cowboys showed great promise. Randy Gregory, who played incredibly well against the Chargers, played an impressive game yet again, even though most people believed he needed to gain more weight to perform well. He got to the quarterback for the 2nd straight week as well as forcing two holding calls against the 49ers. Ryan Russell and Ben Gardner both got sacks, and overall it was a solid performance for the Dallas team.

Bottom Line

For the Cowboys, this entire preseason is just to gain some performance data on the rookies so they can make an educated decision on their final rosters for the regular season. Losing games like these hurt, but in the end they have no effect on how the Cowboys will do in the regular season. Last season, the Cowboys lost every single preseason game and ended the season with a 12-4 record, and were one Dez Bryant catch away from going deeper in the playoffs. As long as key players remain healthy for the Cowboys, they should be in for another solid season.
