Oculus virtual reality technology was initially centered on gaming and gaming platforms. Oculus tapped with some of the world renowned video game development companies such as Valve, Epic Games, and Unity.
Gaming companies are not the only people interested in Oculus' Rift VR technology. One of the biggest software firm, Microsoft, is currently working hand in hand with Oculus to fine tune the already refined technology.
One of the recent developments in Microsoft involving VR technology is the development of an improved lens for the Oculus Rift HMD.
A post at Microsoft's site spoke of CAD files and source code, which could help to correct lens distortion in the display. The lens was designed by the LensFactory Program, ran by the Microsoft Research and Development teams.
The source code worked better with Unity game engine and the lens showed a significant improvement in the display. The lenses were made from Edmund Optics' off the shelf lens elements.
Oculus VR technology inspired other companies such as HTC and Sony to work with their own design of various VR platforms. HTC recently, in partnership with Valve, works on the development of the HTC Vive while Sony is working on Project Morpheus headset for Playstation 4.
The recent deal between Oculus and the world's largest social media, Facebook, has offered new venue for the VR technology. Though the deal had a rocky start, it all worked out for Zuckerberg and the Oculus team. It can be recalled, Facebook began working on virtual reality applications since February.
At the Oculus event last June, the Head of Xbox Phil Spencer and Oculus CEO, Brendan Iribe revealed some hints on Oculus Rift launch which is to be expected in the first quarter of 2016.
There is no confirmation yet as to how much the technology would cost but according to online sources such as alphr.com, the technology would cost approximately £330. The Oculus event this September could possibly provide its fanatics and patronizers with more details regarding the device.
Oculus Connect 2 will be held in Loews Hotel in Hollywood, California on Sept. 23 to 25. The event will feature over 30 forums with leading experts in virtual gaming, social media and virtual reality. A schedule of the activities is made available at the Oculus site.
