Virtual reality could take the world in another spin as the war for the best virtual reality platforms heats up. Facebook tries to bring VR social media through mobile devices. Facebook top executives have been working hard promoting partnerships with Oculus - known VR technology pioneer. Having completed a $2 billion dollar deal with Oculus VR Inc., Facebook raised the bar of virtual reality technology by pushing for its use as a social media platforms.
Making use of the virtual reality platforms they acquired from Oculus, Facebook tech teams are currently working hard to see the project through. The 360-degree video application can help Facebook run spherical videos in the news feeds which would enable the users to interact with the data in a 3D virtual world.
Early this year, Google was reported to be promoting upend for VR technology. A group of engineers from Google's tech team have been secretly trying to develop a virtual reality version which could run in Android devices.
The Wall Street Journal reported that once it is finished, Google will be giving it away for free as it has done in the past.
The video app might be less immersive compared to that of the VR headsets but pairing 360-degree video application with a mobile device might just do the trick or even surpass its counterparts. The mobile-video app could widen the influence of Facebook in virtual reality through a much larger audience.
Oculus VR Inc., will proceed with the distribution of the VR gears early next year and is expected to sell about 1.5 million of VR headsets.
Though it may seem a competition, the current virtual reality platform war can only bring humanity to one of its milestones and one that resembles unity.
In one of Zuckerberg's posts in Facebook last year it said, "Virtual reality was once the dream of science fiction. But the internet was also once a dream, and so were computers and smartphones. The future is coming and we have a chance to build it together. ... to bring this future to the world, and to unlock new worlds for all of us."
